“客体永久性”是指理解即使看不见某物，它依然存在的能力。大多数孩子在两岁左右就能完全掌握客体永久性。但在技术政治领域，就连成年立法者也缺乏这种认知。这些混蛋连躲猫猫游戏都玩不转。

政客们一次又一次地被警告，他们偏爱的政策将 a) 造成巨大的附带损害，并且 b) 很容易被他们所试图控制的人规避，从而引发一系列越来越极端的措施。然而，他们吞下蜘蛛去抓苍蝇，当我们告诉他们现在必须吞下整只鸟才能抓到蜘蛛时，他们却表现得震惊又受伤：

再来就是那些经久不衰的“禁止加密技术”论调。若要禁止有效的加密技术，就必须取缔自由/开源软件；必须对进入本国的每一台设备进行检查；必须搭建一道“数字长城”，屏蔽所有可能承载有效加密技术的网站。这样一来，心脏起搏器、防抱死刹车系统和核电站等设备的软件将无法可靠更新，而身份窃贼、外国势力和企业间谍却能轻易入侵政府、企业和家庭——即便如此，禁令依然无法奏效！

如今，政治精英们又陷入了一个新的集体幻觉：“年龄验证”。但事实上，这种东西根本不存在。你无法“验证”一名互联网用户的年龄——你只能尝试将流经整个互联网的每一个字节都归因于某个明确身份的人。
